Macabre Mallet: Part Two : 1960-1964

Following the success of the Macabre Mallet movies of the 1950s Peterson Leigh was eager to continue with this winning formula.

Imogen Hartley (Promo Shot circa 1963)

Rupert Stanhope and Vincent Bannister were enjoying a revitalisation in their careers and Imogen Harley had already established herself as the Queen of British Horror.

Lilith Ashcroft

As the 1960s dawned, the cinematic landscape witnessed the ascent of a rising luminary, Lilith Ashcroft and saw the introduction of a fresh face, Scarlet Kensington, whose debut performance took centre stage in the inaugural film of the era.

NUTTER [1960]

This disturbing horror saw debutante Scarlet Kensington play nice and lovely Pam who is about to come face to face with ‘The Nutter’.

Modern day audiences would likely be unfamiliar and indeed question the plausibility of a weird man who lives with his Mother that likes to attack women just going about their day yet this was one of the most shocking movies of 1960.

The famous bath scene from NUTTER. In the original 1960 release, due to strict censorship rules this scene had to be reshot so Scarlet Kensington emerged from the bath tub in a full evening dress and fur coat. The original nude version was restored for the 15th anniversary release in 1975 when it was okay to show that sort of thing

AN EXCLAMATION OF TERROR [1961]

Imogen Hartley plays Susan who sees ghosts wherever she is causing her to scream out in terror.

Still from AN EXCLAMATION OF TERROR

Quentin Stroud plays her long suffering husband who wants her to keep it down while he’s trying to listen to the cricket.

Rupert Stanhope plays the stuffy Doctor who thinks she just needs to calm down a bit.

Lilith Ashcroft is the Nurse, bored of Stanhope’s dismissive nature, that sorts it all out.

WHAT THE HELL HAS HAPPENED TO BARBARA?! [1962]

When Human Resources Manager Barbara is infected by an alien parasite she starts acting up by murdering her work colleagues.

Still from WHAT THE HELL HAS HAPPENED TO BARBARA?!

Rupert Stanhope plays the strict Manager who Barbara has in her sights and Scarlet Kensington plays The Secretary who quickly regrets taking Barbara’s yoghurt from the fridge.

HOW TO DATE A DEMON [1963]

Scarlet Kensington plays Audrey who, tired of a string of failed romances, turns to the occult to find her love.

Still from HOW TO DATE A DEMON

But will dating a demon be a swipe fright?

THE EYES ARE UP HERE [1964]

Quentin Stroud stars as a once renowned stage actor who is forced into exile after a freak accident that caused him to lose his eyebrows.

Alone in his mountain top chateau he becomes a tad creepy and becomes obsessed with new starlet Carol (Imogen Hartley).

Still from THE EYES ARE UP HERE

Things take a sinister turn when he kidnaps her and holds her captive in his chateau.
